Thomas Barter

Thomas started his career in California where he made large scale ceramic works for public spaces until moving to New Zealand with his family in 2003. He has made and installed several artworks around Auckland City, and continues to do so. In 2010 he took a class in glass casting and this changed the direction of his practice from ceramics to glass.

Thomas’s ceramic expertise in mold-making was an advantage in making the transition to lost wax casting. He began with traditional origami forms, planes, cranes and boats and has expanded this  with animals and birds. The challenge of casting these complex shapes adds to the fascination of his work, the juxtaposition between their origins as folded paper into solid, luminous sculptures that captivate and entrance.
