Jeanette Shearer

Jeanette makes intricate little baskets, or kete, from a white NZ stoneware clay which are then decorated with feathers and beautifully presented in a deep frame. Each piece is unique and individually crafted, creating a representation of the woven kete traditionally made by Maori women from a native flax, Harakeke. Ketes were used as gathering and storage baskets for food, belongings and treasures. The Maori craft of kete making has a long history and the art of weaving is being kept alive and passed onto others.
